Big storage crunch? Helldivers 2 may just clear a ton of space for you. The latest beta update reveals a dramatic slimming of the PC build—roughly an 85% reduction in file size—freeing up enough room for one or two additional large games.
On the game’s Steam page, the developers explained that their long-term goal was to bring the PC installation size in line with the console versions, and, with help from Nixxes, that target has been reached much sooner than expected. By fully removing duplicate data, they’ve cut the PC install from about 154GB down to around 23GB, delivering a total saving of about 131GB.
Load times are expected to see only minimal impact, described as seconds at most. The original heft came from duplicating asset data to boost loading on mechanical hard drives, a technique estimated to benefit only about 11 percent of Helldivers 2 players.
According to the update, the real driver of load times in Helldivers 2 is level generation, not asset loading. Duplicating assets for the sake of faster loads offered limited benefit and increased the file size for nearly all players.
PC players can opt into the technical public beta on Steam to experience the “slim” version now. Once beta testing shakes out any remaining issues, this streamlined build will become the default.
If you’re following Helldivers 2 developments, this change could be a game changer for players with tight drive space—or for anyone who wants to install more titles without juggling storage limits.
