Though there are many types of cleansers to choose from—creams, oils, milks, waters, etc.—many people prefer gels. “Gel cleansers are popular because they can effectively cleanse the skin without stripping it of its natural moisture,” says Fort Wayne, IN dermatologist Dana Spearman, MD. “I often recommend them for my oily or acne-prone patients to help treat and prevent pimples while still protecting the skin from excess dryness.” But, gels aren’t just reserved for those prone to excess oil and breakouts. When formulated correctly, gel cleansers can be a great option for dry skin, sensitive skin and mature skin, too. In fact, three dermatologists we interviewed recommended the same product for dry skin (scroll down to see which one).
“A good cleanser sets the tone for your entire skin-care routine,” says New York dermatologist Julie Russak, MD. “It should support your skin barrier, respect its pH, and prep the skin to actually absorb the actives you’re about to apply.” Below, see the best gel cleanser for every skin type, according to top derms.
